Where are Your Priorities?
By Greg Christman
We all have many things to do each day. Some are personal, some are family oriented, some are for work, some are just for fun, and some are for God; currently most of us make that distinction, that some of what we do is in fact for God. Balance is a very important part of our spiritual walk as God calls us to serve him only. Sometimes we interpret this to me we must serve the church, our spouse, the homeless, poor, and all the others God puts before us.
With all these kinds of activities, we can sometimes get our priorities out of whack and we may find ourselves doing all the wrong things. We may even find ourselves doing all the “right” things, as in serving the church, and serving God, but we fail to serve our family, and thus we do these “right” things, for the wrong reasons. Here is my understanding of what God desires for us in keeping our priorities in line.
Ultimately God desires nothing more than a personal relationship with each one of us, where we serve him, obey his commands, and where we love him with all our heart. In theory, that sounds pretty simple. But, somehow we tend to mess it all up. I know in my case I find myself chasing after “God-meetings” (i.e. healing ministry, Christian Business Association, Adult Enrichment, bible study, men’s group, etc…) on a regular basis. These may be great things, but if we participate in them at the expense of family and work, then they are not being done in alignment with God’s will.
At other times, I find myself buried in work and making excuses to do more work, and I ignore family and God. All of these things lead me to be out of balance.
Yes, God wants us in relationship with him, but we need to realize that he also desires us to love, honor and cherish our spouse, and he wants us to provide for our family. He wants us to serve our children. God desires for us to be happy, and to love one another. What we need to do is balance our lives, in Christ. We should serve our family, in Christ. We should do our work, and serve our customers, in Christ. We should seek God, in Christ.
If we do everything, in Christ, then we are in fact serving God in all that we do. By bringing Christ to our workplace and by utilizing all that we know about Christ, and the way he led his church, and the way he treated others, we can in fact serve God, and ultimately live a life of constant prayer, in and through everything that we do.
Our work should be an extension of worship and prayer. The time we spend with our family, should be an act of worship. The meetings we attend for God-based activities should also be an act of worship. All things that we do, should be done out of love for God, and out of love for our neighbors. If we begin to live this way, and if we begin to serve others, in Christ, I think we all will begin to feel closer to God and we will begin to see a positive change in our society.
Seek God in all that you do, and ask the Holy Spirit to help keep you balanced in all aspects of your life. Seek to know God’s will for your work, your family, and for all of your God-activities. By making sure God is part of every decision, and by ensuring that you are working from love, for God, you will achieve balance in all aspects of your life.
Seek God first, and serve your family out of love, and then take the time you have left to work and be sure to keep your priorities in alignment with God’s will. Thy will be done, Lord!
