Waiting or Walking
By Greg Christman

I have read the Bible, some parts over and over, and I have listened to many hours of sermons talking about what we should be doing, and about many things we should not. One thing that I continue to hear about is relationship with God and others. What does your relationship with God look like? If yours is different than mine, who is right? If we are in relationship with other believers, how do we determine who has the right path, and who has the right balance of priorities in their lives? There is a simple answer to all these questions, but we seem to complicate it because of our very nature.

GOD! God has the only answer that matters. If we seek God, and if we hear from God, we will know exactly what we are to be doing, and what we should not. But, therein is the really complicated issue that we seem to muddle up in our human nature. How do we hear from God? How do we know if we are really hearing His voice, and if we are making decisions in His will?

Are you waiting or walking? Many of us spend a lot of time waiting on God. We read the bible. We spend time at church. We attend small groups and bible studies. We are working out our salvation with fear and trembling. (Phil 2:12) Wait, you are not doing any of these things? Then, get started. If you are not doing any of this, then you need to get active in your relationship with God. And how can you do that if you are not getting in touch with Him, in His word, in relationships with others, and by becoming active in your salvation.

Now, if you are doing these things, great. However, are you waiting or walking? If you are waiting on God, and waiting to hear his voice, and waiting for something special to happen… then you are taking a pretty inactive role in your relationship with God. I suggest you start walking. Walk in the assurance that God will guide you through the Holy Spirit and that He will lead you on your way. A sailboat can be beautiful… but if it never leaves the marina, it never really has an opportunity to be what it is supposed to be. Allow yourself to sail, in the wind of the Spirit, and allow God to lead your footsteps by walking, in His assurance, and in His love.

Your relationship with God must be an active one. Think of it like a marriage. If you were to spend an hour a week, for 5 years, getting to know your future spouse… would you be willing to commit the rest of your life to them? Probably not. God does not want an hour a week at church. Go spend time with Him. Read his Word. Pray… talk to Him and listen to what he has to say. You may be surprised what you hear. Spend time with God today. Begin walking with God, and start building the most important relationship in life you will ever have, that can, and will lead you to everlasting life.
