One of the major issues that we are dealing with in America is the absence of the voice of Christians in the political and cultural debate. Although we would all agree that the message of the love of God is important, it is not the entire message. Jesus exhorted us in Mathew that His followers were to go into all the world and teach them to observe all I have commanded you. The idea that Christianity is a passive — personal only — system of beliefs has given us the cultural sewer that we find our children swimming in today!
Jesus said we would be SALT — not sugar.
A quick study will show you the elements of salt. Unfortunately, many in the American Church system have been trained to present the Gospel as sugar. Here are five elements of salt. Ask yourself if the average American Christian is being trained in how to be salt in a poisoned culture.
• Salt is a preservative. It keeps things from rotting. Salt came before refrigeration.
• Salt regulates the function of the body.
• Salt adds flavor.
• Salt heals wounds.
• Salt melts ice…and cold hearts.
• Salt stings.
• Salt kills slugs.
That’s just to name a few. Sugar kills. Salt heals. Christians are supposed to be salt!
