Gender Deconstruction

Summer  2026

It is perplexing to watch the growth of the transgender movement over the past number of years.  While President Trump has waged a battle against the ideology with his characteristic high energy and relentlessness, you get the feeling that there are many strongholds left unscathed.  Much of what remains appears to have gone dormant or underground, biding its time until there is once again a friend of that corner of the woke world in the White House.

The success of the movement is still visible in directing the narrative, redefining language, and enabling people to be intellectually fulfilled in an obviously unscientific viewpoint.  Such things do not happen overnight.  There are many contributing factors that have been decades in the making.  Let me highlight just a few of the influences.  The feminists’ push for egalitarianism and gender neutrality have made the basis for much of the ideological witches’ brew.

More than 50 years ago, Marlo Thomas spearheaded a project to break down gender stereotypes.  It first produced an illustrated book and record album of songs and narrations called “Free to Be … You and Me.”  She was joined by many prominent celebrities such as Alan Alda, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross.  It was later a 1974 ABC television special.  Thomas was inspired to model values to her young niece (and the world at large) that anyone can accomplish his/her dreams.  It was a push back to the gender stereotypes in children’s books and culture.

Interestingly, with the battle directed against many “sacred cows,” one that earned her frequent complaints was a narrated track on the record that explained that everyone hates housework, and when you get married make sure you share the drudgery.  In an interview, Thomas explained:

“In among all the praise we got for the project as a whole, we kept getting all these letters and phone calls talking about the track sounding as if it wasn’t normal to be fond of cooking and cleaning and caretaking etc. So we left that off the [television] special for that reason.”

Fast forward to today, and there are many traditional women who resent the culture treating them as if they are not normal for wanting to raise children rather than pursue or advance their careers.  This is a major factor in the so-called gender pay gap.  It is widely assumed that any disparity in pay between a man and a woman must be due to a sinister “boy’s club” mentality to devalue female  employees.  However, many women delay their entry into the workforce or seek fewer hours or less demanding work to maximize family time.  These “loopy ladies” won’t get past the gender stereotypes and are ruining the curve for everyone.

I found a mandatory course on gender topics at my workplace a couple of years back laughable.  There was a segment cautioning employees not to be biased against transgendered co-workers.  It was complete with the pseudo-science that “gender” and “sex” are not the same thing.  Later in the course was a segment about the evils of gender stereotyping.  Did they realize that if we agreed to be good little citizens and forsake all gender stereotyping, that no one would have the ability to justify his/her status as a transgender?  The typical story goes that William, for example, knew he was a girl early on, because he loved the color pink and wanted to play with dolls.  The Free to Be … You and Me song, “William’s Doll,” exposes this as a harmful gender stereotype and explains that it is perfectly normal for a boy to want to play with a doll — in fact, it will help him be a better father someday.

Can people really have it both ways?  Sadly, yes.  The “Free to Be … You and Me” record and special were not just ways to fight stereotyping, but a way to remove gender distinctions and foster a gender-neutral society.  Now, this has led to the modern confusion that there is no definition of the word “woman.”  It can mean something different to each person.  Yet, we are expected to honor each person’s varying definition even when it differs from our own.  Go with the flow and don’t ask too many questions.  We are institutionalizing multiple personality disorder.

R.C. Sproul, in his book, If There’s a God, Why Are There Atheists? explains that people resent the goody-two-shoes who holds up a standard that is hard for others to match.

It is a common occurrence among social human beings that a person who manifests a superior excellence is resented by his contemporaries. The student who consistently breaks the curve of the academic grading system is frequently treated with quiet hostility by his classmates. Part of the now famous Peter Principle is that it is not only the super-incompetent person who is doomed to failure within the hierarchical structure of large corporations. The super-competent individual also faces the grim prospect of limited success by virtue of his very level of competence. The unusually competent person represents a threat not only to his peers but to his superiors as well, and is frequently treated as a persona non grata.

And here we have the crux of the issue.  The tearing down of all gender distinctions, even inbred tendencies and biological differences between the sexes, is a rebellion against the God-designed standard and the reflection of His superior excellence in man.

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”  (Genesis 1:27).
