March 2025“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore, be zealous and repent.” (Revelation 3:19 NKJV)
In this month’s article I would like to propose that the American Church could learn a lot from the Laodicean Church found in the book of Revelation. If I am being honest, I know we could learn a lot from the letters to the seven churches in Asia Minor found in Revelation chapters 2 and 3.
The letter to the Laodicean church describes a lukewarm church. Jesus Himself says, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16 NKJV).
There is nothing worse than a body of believers that are just playing church to the point that Christ wishes to vomit that Church out of His mouth. If we take the name of Christ and add it to what we are doing it surely better be done soberly and reverently. Unfortunately, the American Church has sat on the sidelines engaging in nothing more than a glorified show.
Let me be clear, I am painting with a broad brush that certainly is not applicable to all the churches in America. When I use the term “American Church,” I am talking about the lukewarm watered-down church that exports nothing more than health, wealth, prosperity, and weak and erroneous doctrine. I think when people say we should not talk about doctrine they say so either because they fail to understand that doctrine matters, or because they rightly understand that doctrine matters and it will expose their false teaching. We need to stand with Truth.
We need to recognize that the American Church has the opportunity to repent and start living as the Bible teaches that we should. It is time we begin to fear God and treat Him with the reverent respect He deserves as the God of all creation. The perversion of grace needs to end, and we need to get to a place where our heart breaks over sin. I find it hard that some will try to convince me that we are at such a place right now. If our hearts broke for sin, would we ever have seen the mass murder of the unborn in this country in the name of “women’s healthcare?” If we loved children, would we have allowed the wicked to use, abuse, and mutilate them in the name of “love?”
I am glad that many Christians have taken a stand against sin. However, I call for those in the Church who may have compromised with the world, and those who may have checked out, to stand up for the Truth of God’s Word. It is time we see a mass repentance in the Church.
The Greek word for repentance is “Metanoia.” We have sadly distilled the meaning of repentance down to a synonym for “sorry.” While Godly repentance will produce sorrow, repentance means something much more than just being sorry. Repentance carries with it the notion of a one hundred and eighty degree change of direction. The Greek word Metanoia comes from meta meaning “after,” and “noia,” which means “mind.” Repentance is a changing of the mind that results in a complete change of direction.
America, it is past time for us to repent. We must stop the compromise between the Church and the world under the banner of tolerance. Why should the Church tolerate that which God cannot tolerate? I am all about showing love, but showing love must start with the acknowledgment of what God’s Word has to say about sin. You cannot claim to love someone and remain silent on what the Bible has to say when silence is effectively an eternal death sentence. If you know there is eternal damnation and eternal life, and that Christ is the way the Truth and the life, how can you not share that with everyone you meet? The only way you can know the Truth and remain silent is if your fear of man is greater than your fear of God.
We must follow the truth that Christ shared with the Church at Laodicea. “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore, be zealous and repent.” (Revelation 3:19 NKJV).
We find ourselves in the economic, social, political, and religious upheaval we are currently in because God has used these conditions to chasten us in His love. He has rebuked us so we might see the danger of continuing down the path of destruction we are on because of our love for sin and the darkness. We must be zealous for His Word and repent of the sin we have allowed to go unchecked in society.
