So You Think You Are Covered?

   Most people driving automobiles in Wisconsin have insurance coverage. In fact, it is now mandatory. Similarly, most people believe they are adequately covered. They talk to their insurance agent or, shop online and believe they have what is necessary. Unfortunately, it is only after an automobile accident that drivers learn the sad truth.

   Most people know what liability coverage is. Liability coverage is designed to protect the driver of a vehicle if that driver causes an injury to someone else. When their policy of insurance says it provides $100,000.00 of liability coverage, it is easy to understand that is what will be provided.  However, it is when dealing with the other coverage provided by an automobile insurance policy that the average person finds out they are being taken advantage of.

   Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is as important as liability coverage. Remember, liability coverage will only be necessary if you are negligent and cause an accident. If you are a safe and careful driver, the odds are you will not cause an accident. However, that does not mean you will not be involved in an accident because of another driver’s negligence. Many of my clients have told me “there was nothing they could do,” to avoid the accident.  Unfortunately, this typically is true. This is when uninsured and underinsured coverage is critical.
